buildON

buildOn continues to make a powerful impact on students throughout Detroit Public Schools Community District by selecting outstanding candidates for the 2026 school year who have demonstrated dedication to community service and leadership. The program recognizes students and staff members who are committed to improving their communities through volunteerism, teamwork, and global service learning opportunities. This year, 22 DPSCD students were selected after completing more than 100 hours of community service and showing a strong commitment to helping others both inside and outside of school.

The selected group will travel to Senegal where they will participate in building a school for students in a local community. This life-changing experience will allow students to work together while learning about culture, leadership, responsibility, and the importance of education on a global level. The students have worked diligently throughout the school year volunteering in their schools and neighborhoods, understanding that community service is not only about giving back, but also about creating positive change for future generations.

Several dedicated staff members from DPSCD were also selected to support and guide students throughout this important journey. Among those participating are Damian Perry, Bryant Tipton, Irene Chungag, and Lisa Blackwell. These educators and leaders have encouraged students to remain focused on service, education, and personal growth while demonstrating what it means to lead by example.

The partnership between buildOn and Detroit Public Schools Community District continues to provide students with opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. By requiring students to complete volunteer hours and actively serve their communities, the organization helps develop responsible, compassionate, and globally aware young leaders. The experience of traveling to Senegal to help build a school will not only benefit the students overseas, but it will also leave a lasting impact on the DPSCD students who dedicated their time and energy to making a difference in the world.
